Happy Ending for California Girl Cheated Out of Spelling Bee Trophy

March 16, 2013

(NEW YORK) -- There was a controversy last week at a local spelling bee in Fresno County, Calif., when 12-year-old Sierra Shoemaker incorrectly spelled the word "Braille."  Well, that's what the judge told her.

It seems Shoemaker actually did give the correct spelling while the judge maintained the word only had one "L."

Shoemaker lost the trophy and settled for second-place although she admitted, "I was shocked.  I was just kind of like, 'What?'"

The Selma School District made an appeal to right the wrong that was perpetrated.  Now, Shoemaker will join two other students for the next round of the Spelling Bee on the county level.
